WHAT IS THE TSC FUTURE LEADER INSTITUTE?

TSC Future Leaders Institue Promotional Logo.Modeled after Tallahassee State College's President's Leadership Institute, the Future Leaders Institute (FLI) was created to develop the next generation of leaders through education, service, reflection, and community engagement. 

The TSC Future Leaders Institute is designed for students interested in building their leadership skills and confidence while actively participating in our vibrant campus community.

The program combines leadership education with real-world application, providing students with opportunities to strengthen their leadership skills while making a meaningful impact throughout the community. Through the Future Leaders Institute, Student Government Association (SGA), and Peer Leader programs, more than 70 student leaders participated in leadership development experiences designed to prepare them for success both on campus and beyond.

DEVELOPING LEADERS THROUGH EXPERIENCE

Students explore topics such as:

Program members will have the opportunity to engage in activities that develop these competencies in a variety of ways, including:

  • In-Person Workshops
  • Collaborative Activities and Assignments

Building Confidence Through Communication

Effective leaders must be able to communicate with confidence and clarity. Throughout the program, participants strengthened these skills through:

  • Impromptu speaking activities
  • Individual and group presentations
  • Service-learning project presentations
  • Leadership discussions and panel conversations
  • Collaborative problem-solving exercises

Students present their service-learning projects, shared innovative ideas, facilitated discussions, and explored emerging topics including artificial intelligence, workforce development, innovation, and the future of education. These experiences help participants develop confidence, professionalism, and the ability to effectively communicate ideas in both academic and professional settings.

Community Impact with Purpose

A cornerstone of the Future Leaders Institute is its emphasis on service-learning as a leadership laboratory. Students are placed into projects based on interest and community need, reinforcing leadership as responsibility, service, and stewardship. 

Highlighted Projects Include: 

  • Middle School Mentorship Initiative 
    Students served as mentors, emphasizing leadership through presence, accountability, and positive role modeling. 
  • Senior Living Community Engagement 
    Students supported older adults through service and connection, highlighting leadership through empathy and compassion. 
  • Community Support Services – Kearney Center of Tallahassee 
    Students partnered with the Kearney Center, gaining insight into social responsibility, equity, and leadership grounded in dignity and service. 
  • Environmental Stewardship Initiative (City Partnership) 
    Through the Lake Ella Clean-Up, students engaged in hands-on environmental service, promoting sustainability and civic pride. 

Leadership with Global Relevance

The Future Leaders Institute is intentionally aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on quality education, sustainable cities and communities, reduced inequalities, and partnerships for the goals. 

FLI reinforces the principle that leadership is not positional. It is practiced through action, service, and accountability to others. 

Fall Medallion Ceremony

The Fall Medallion Ceremony marked the culmination of a powerful leadership development experience rooted in service, reflection, and civic engagement. Each participant demonstrated confidence, clarity, and purpose through their presentations, underscoring the Future Leaders Institute as a meaningful pipeline for engaged, service-oriented student leadership at TSC.

To participate in the TSC Future Leaders Institute, you must:

  • Be currently enrolled in at least six credit hours
  • Be in good standing with college (GPA minimum 2.0)

Students who meet these requirements can:

  • Complete the information inquiry form to be considered for the program
  • Once approved, you will start your leadership journey

To successfully complete the Future Leadership Institute, students must participate in all sessions and projects listed below. Each pathway is intentionally designed to reflect the diverse interests of our students while strengthening their leadership foundation.
