Federal Pell Grant Updates for 2026-27

Effective July 1, 2026

Federal Pell Grant eligibility is changing beginning with the 2026-2027 award year. These changes are the result of new federal legislation and may affect your eligibility for Pell Grant funding.

This information is based on current federal guidance and may be updated as additional guidance becomes available from the U.S. Department of Education.

What's Changing?

Student Aid Index (SAI) Limit

Beginning July 1, 2026, students with a Student Aid Index (SAI) of 14,790 or higher will not be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant.

Cost of Attendance Rule

Students whose scholarships, grants, tuition assistance, or other resources fully cover their Cost of Attendance (COA) may not be eligible to receive a Federal Pell Grant.

Your Cost of Attendance includes:

  • Tuition and fees
  • Books and supplies
  • Housing and food
  • Transportation
  • Personal expenses

What Has Not Changed?

  • You must still complete the FAFSA each year.
  • Pell Grants do not have to be repaid unless you become ineligible after receiving funds.
  • Pell Grant awards are still based on financial need and enrollment status.
  • Lifetime Pell Grant limits still apply.

What Should Students Do?

  1. Complete the 2026-2027 FAFSA as early as possible.
  2. Monitor your Workday account for required documents and action items.
  3. Review your financial aid offer carefully once awards become available.
